Rams Open 2021 Season at CIU Rams Invitational
COLUMBIA, SC – The wait ended for the Winston-Salem State University Rams track & field team as they opened the 2021 outdoor track & field season at the Columbia International University Rams Invitational, Saturday. After missing the entire 2020 outdoor season and the entire 2021 indoor track & field seasons due to COVID-19 precautions, the Rams had some solid performances when they returned to action.
The Rams had their most impressive performances on the track with strong efforts in their sprint events. WSSU sophomore Raven Haston had a strong day as she placed seventh in the women's 100m dash with a 12.65 in the event. She also placed 12th in the women's 200m dash when she ran a 26.66. Freshman Essence Newkirk was impressive in her collegiate debut when she placed 36th in the women's 400m run with a 1:06.49. In the women's 800m run, it was senior Tamia McLean who led the way when she ran a 2:35.97 to place 25th in the event. In the women's 4x400m relay, the Rams placed fifth with a 4:24.48.
In the field events, it was Rams sophomore Alyssa Farmer who carried the day for the Rams. She placed 15th in the women's discus throw with a 96'11" (29.54m) throw. The distance was first in her flight by two feet.
