Bio

2021-22 - The Winston-Salem State Women's indoor track and field team had an impressive start to the season at the Winston-Salem College Kick-Off Meet held at the Twin City's JDL Fast Track. Essence Newkirk was the top DII finisher in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.09. The Winston-Salem State University track and field team concluded the two-day 2022 CIAA Indoor Track & Field Championships where Essence Newkirk qualified for the finals with a time of 9.14 which earned her 3rd place. In the finals, Newkirk came in seventh with a time of 9.21. Winston Salem State indoor track and field team was back in action competing at the VMI Winter Relays. VMI Winter Relays, Essence competed in the 60m dash prelims with a time 8.65 respectively.

Personal: Essence joined the Rams in the fall of 2020. She came to Winston-Salem State University after a season at Lenoir-Rhyne University where she was a member of the 2019 South Atlantic Conference (SAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championship team. She is a graduate of New Hanover High School where she earned several honors. She earned a spot on the all-conference team as well as being named the team MVP. She placed second in the 300m hurdles at her conference championship meet. She also placed second in the 100m hurdles at the same meet. She was also the region champion in the women’s 300m hurdles. She also competed in both volleyball and basketball in high school. She is a Sport Management major and she is the daughter of Ladrema Bordeaux.
