Rams Finish Strong at the Winston-Salem College Kick-Off Meet
The Winston-Salem State Women's indoor track and field team had an impressive start to the season at the Winston-Salem College Kick-Off Meet held at the Twin City's JDL FastTrack. The meet featured Division I schools Wake Forest N.C. State and many others in addition to Division II schools. The Rams distance medley relay, composed of Ravel Ferrell, Tinasia Davis, Wynter Sample and Vanessa Jones, was first among all schools with a time of 13:46.47.
WSSU owned the 800-meter run. Tiarra Smith finished second with a time of 2:26.79. Tamia McLean was close behind, finishing third in 2:27.05. Fifth place belonged to Raven Ferrell (22:40.06) and Davis was eighth with a time of 2:44.79. Amique Willis was first in her 200-meter dash section with a time of 26.93. Oshamiya Black won her section, finishing the race in 28.60. Kyndall Barrow won her section with a time of 27.86. Sample was second in the 400-meter section (1:04.62). Jones was sixth in the 1000-meter run. She was the top DII finisher in that race. Essence Newkirk was the top DII finisher in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.09.
The Rams 4x400 relay team featuring Willis, Tamia McLean, Imani Tatum and Carrington Wise-Smith, won sixth place. The Rams relay team's time was 4:04.89, tops among DII schools. 'SU's success didn't stop on the track. Several Rams had great finishes in field events. Kennedy Alexander was third in the high jump (5-7.25). Tionna Wilson was sixth in the triple jump (36-8.25) and ninth in the long jump (17.3.5). Alyssa Smith was third among DII participants in the shot put (35-10.)
The Rams will break for exams and Christmas and then travel to Columbia, SC, on January 15 for the Gamecock Opener at the University of South Carolina.
