Antonio Wells joined the Winston-Salem State University cross country/track & field programs in the summer of 2018 and will bring a wealth of experience and a passion for the sport help guide one of the premier programs in the Atlantic region.

He came to Winston-Salem State after two years at Morgan State University in the NCAA Division I’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). During his time with the Bears, he coached seven All-MEAC performers. Prior to joining the staff at Morgan State, Wells spent two seasons at Kentucky State of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). During that time, he helped guide the Thoroughbreds to several honors, including a third place finish at the 2014 SIAC Men’s Cross Country Championship, a school record in the men’s 800 m run and six individual and one relay United States Track & Field/Cross Country Association (USTFCCA) All-South Region honors. In 2015, he helped the Thoroughbreds produce two All-SIAC runners in cross country and eight NCAA Division II All-Americans. For his efforts, he was named the USTFCCCA South Region DII Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year. He began his coaching career at his alma mater Fort Valley State where he coached for two seasons with the Wildcats. Alongside head coach Ella O’Kelley, he had a successful tenure, helping to produce four All-Americans, a three-time triple jump national champion, five SIAC champions, 24 All-SIAC outdoor track & field performers, and the runners-up in the 2011 SIAC Women’s Track & Field Championship. He also helped to produce three school record-setting performances.  

In addition to a strong career as a student-athlete. He was a three-time All-SIAC performer at his alma mater Fort Valley State. He also became the school record holder in the steeplechase and the 2008 cross country MVP.

Wells is a graduate of Fort Valley State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.
