Rams Take a Four-Set Win Over Fayetteville State

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (9-12, 8-2 CIAA) claimed their second straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division victory when the team took a four-set win over the Fayetteville State Broncos (3-10, 3-4 CIAA), Monday evening. The Rams took the win behind a great offensive outing, defeating the Broncos, 27-25, 16-25, 25-15, and 25-13.

The Rams took the win behind one of their best offensive showings of the season. As a team, the Rams totaled 40 kills in the match with the tandem of junior Danyale Berry and Miranda Taylor both recording 11 kills each in the match. Junior Ytae Cobb did her damage at the service line with four service aces.

The opening set turned out to be the most thrilling set of the match. In the early going, the set belonged to the Rams who jumped out to a 9-1 lead. The Rams benefited from three FSU errors to go along with kills from Taylor and Cobb during the run. The Rams carried their lead late into the set, 23-16, before they allowed FSU to mount a furious rally. The Rams allowed the Broncos to go on an 8-1 run that tied the set, 24-24. The two teams played to a 25-25 tie before sophomore middle blocker Alexis Gregson-Hammond recorded a kill that was followed by an FSU attack error that gave the Rams the 27-25 opening set win.

The second told a much different story. The beginning was very competitive with the two teams playing to a 5-5 tie before the Rams allowed the Broncos to go on a 9-2 run that left WSSU trailing, 7-14. The Rams were able to mount a three-point rally of their own with a Cobb service ace and a pair of FSU attack errors. The effort left the Rams trailing, 10-14. It was as close as the Rams would get with Fayetteville State going on to claim the 25-16 set win.

The third and fourth sets both belonged to the Rams as the team would not be denied. Once again, the Rams opened the third set with a big effort, jumping out to a 7-3 lead over the Broncos. Fayetteville State would go on a rally of their own to cut the Rams' lead down to a point, 8-7. However, the Rams would explode for a 10-3 run that included kills from Berry, Taylor, and Gregson-Hammond. Freshman libero Gabrielle Azar also added a pair of service aces during the run as well. After taking a 23-14 lead over the Broncos, the Rams never looked back as a Cobb kill ended the set with the 25-15 WSSU win.

The fourth set looked a lot like the third set when the Rams once again dominated to take the win. After taking an early lead in the set, it was when the team went on a 9-1 run that the team really took control of the set. Once again, Cobb's service game played a big factor with two during the run.  The effort left the Rams in control, 15-6. The Rams went ahead by as many as 11 points 20-9 after a Taylor kill. The team kept the cushion until the final points when an FSU service error and attack error ended the set and the match, 25-13.

With the win, the Rams improve to 9-12 overall and 8-2 in CIAA play. The team also improves to 2-2 in CIAA Southern Division play. The Rams will return to the road for their next action when the team heads to Fayetteville, N.C. to take on the Broncos, Thursday.
