WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (0-1) got the volleyball season started with a three-set loss to the Erskine Fleer (1-0), Friday evening. In a match that saw some great defense by both teams, the Rams came up just short, but there was no shortage of effort in the match with the Rams falling 27-25, 25-20, and 25-23.
As a team, the Rams had a solid defensive effort, but the team could not quite get their scoring effort into gear. The Rams finished the match with 28 kills. WSSU senior outside hitter Miranda Taylor led the way for the Rams with eight kills in the match. Fellow senior outside hitter Ytae Cobb added seven kills as well. The Rams totaled 35 digs with eight blocks in the match.
The Rams shook off a slow start to make the first set of the match the most dramatic one. The Rams struggled early, falling into an 11-1 deficit. The Rams were able to work their way back into the set with a big 18-8 run that tied the set, 19-19. The two teams went on to play to a 25-25 tie before the Rams allowed back-to-back kills from the Fleet to take the 27-25 loss.
The second set was the toughest one for the Rams as the team allowed a late run by the Fleet that the team could not recover from. After playing to a 7-7 tie, the Rams allowed Erskine to go ahead, 12-10. It was an 8-2 run by the Fleet that left the Rams trailing, 20-12. From there, the Rams were able to rally and cut their deficit down to just four points. After a kill from sophomore Tailar Jackon, a WSSU block and a Cobb kill, the Rams pulled themselves to a 20-24 deficit before an Erskine kill ended the set.
The third set was once again a dramatic one. The two teams played to a 16-16 tie before the Rams surged ahead, 20-16, with four straight points. The run included a pair of Cobb kills. However, the Rams allowed Erskine to battle back and tied the set 21-21 before taking a 23-21 lead. However, WSSU allowed four straight points to take the hard fought loss.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 0-1 to start the season. The team won't have long to recover as they will return to action, tomorrow when they host the Benedict Tigers in a 2:00 p.m. match.
