CHARLESTON, WVA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-2) gave it their all, but the team came up short in a three-set loss to the Charleston (W.Va.) Golden Eagles (1-3), Tuesday afternoon. The Rams had a tough time putting points on the scoreboard in the tough loss.
The WSSU offense had an especially tough day against the Golden Eagles. As a team, the Rams totaled 18 kills with 17 hitting errors in the match. In a bright spot for the Rams, the team recorded five service aces in the match. WSSU freshman Sanaa Lanier led the way for the Rams with five kills in the match. Junior outside hitter Alexis Gregson-Hammond and junior right side hitter Danyale Berry added four kills each in the match.
The Rams' struggles began midway through the third set as the team's strong early start didn't last. After playing to a 4-7 score, the Rams allowed the Golden Eagles to seven unanswered points to leave WSSU trailing, 4-14. From there, the Rams managed just five more points to take the 25-9 opening set loss.
The second set saw more struggles from the Rams. Once again, the Rams had a strong early start, but the team allowed a big UC run that they could not overcome. The Rams played the Golden Eagles to a 3-2 lead before allowing 11 straight points and falling behind, 14-3. The Rams were able to cut their deficit down to 10 points, 20-10. However, they could get no closer, falling 25-13 in the second set.
The third set saw the best effort for the Rams as the team took a late lead in the set, but allowed a late run by the Golden Eagles to take the loss. This time, it was the Rams with the big lead as a Berry killed gave the Rams an 11-5 lead over the Golden Eagles. However, WSSU began to slow down and allowed the Golden Eagles to tie the set, 15-15 after a 10-4 run. The Rams would not make things easy for the Golden Eagles as a UC attack error gave WSSU a 21-20 lead. The Rams would fall behind, but a kill from Lanier pulled the Rams to within a point, 24-23 before a WSSU service error ended the match.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-2 to start the season. The team will return to action, Saturday, when the team heads to Belmont, N.C. for a tri-match against Lander and Belmont Abbey.
