Rams Storm Back for a Five-Set Win Over Shaw

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (8-5, 5-1 CIAA) had to come back from two sets down to claim their sixth straight victory when the team took a five-set win over the Shaw Lady Bears (6-8, 6-1 CIAA), Thursday evening. After opening the match with back-to-back set losses, 19-25, and 18-25 to the Lady Bears, the Rams kicked things into gear to win the final three sets of the match, 25-18, 25-20, and 15-11.

The win marks the sixth straight win for the Rams and their home division win of the season. As a team, the Rams had a strong offensive effort with 44 kills in the match. The team also put on a strong defensive effort with 57 digs as well. WSSU senior outside hitter Ytae Cobb led the way for the Rams with 13 kills in the match while fellow senior Miranda Taylor added 11 kills.  WSSU sophomore libero Myra Wallace led the team's defense with 19 digs in the match.

The Rams struggled throughout the first two sets of the match. The opening set was a tough one as the Rams fell into an early 5-12 deficit that they could never overcome, falling 25-19. The second set was the toughest one of the match for the Rams as the team fell, 25-18. The Rams fell behind by as many as six points, 13-19 before taking the 18-25 loss.

It was then that the Rams began their comeback. The team kicked things off with a 25-18 win in the third set. After a taking a 4-4 tie to open the set, the Rams broke out for a, 11-4 run that was capped by a Shaw bad set and left the Rams on top, 15-8. From there, the Rams never looked back. After taking a 24-18 lead over the Lady Bears, a Shaw bad serve ended the set and gave the Rams the win.

The fourth set was just as impressive as the Rams once again came out with a great start. The team jumped ahead of the Lady Bears, 9-4. The Rams allowed the Lady Bears to come back and tie the set, 15-15, but the team would not allow the set win to slip away. The Rams went on to outscore the Lady Bears, 8-2 to take a 23-17 lead. The team allowed three more points to the Lady Bears before a Shaw service error was followed by a Taylor kill that sealed the 25-20 set win and tied the match 2-2 and forced the final fifth set.

In the fifth set, the Rams once again jumped ahead of the Lady Bears with a 7-3 lead to start the set. A kill from sophomore setter Rylee Wilson gave the team an 8-5 lead. The Rams had to fend off a furious comeback effort from the Lady Bears after taking a 13-11 lead. However, a Shaw service error and a service ace from sophomore Tailar Jackson ended the match and the win for the Rams, 15-11.

With the win, the Rams improve to 8-5 overall and 5-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team will return to action, Saturday when they hit the road to take on the Francis Marion Patriots.
