Winston-Salem Rams defeat JCSU Golden Bulls in 3-0 Sweep

The WSSU Volleyball team continued its hot streak with a 3-0 sweep over Johnson C. Smith on October 7 at Whitaker Gym. The Rams have now won three of their last four CIAA matches to even their conference record at 3-3 and improve to 4-10 overall. JCSU dropped to 2-4 in CIAA play and 2-8 overall.
WSSU overcame at five-point deficit early in the opening set before rallying to tie it at 10-10.  The Rams climbed ahead 12-11 and fought off a Golden Bulls rally to win the set 25-20.  
The Rams went up by three points on a kill by CIAA Offensive Player of the Week Raven Gray.  Angel Bowden followed with a service ace to increase the lead to four.
After forging ahead by five at 19-15, WSSU surrendered the next three points to JCSU, but the Golden Bulls rally would be short-lived.
WSSU regained a four-point lead at 23-19 on a kill by sophomore Sanaa Lanier, helping the Rams to close out the set.
The Rams had a slow start in the second set, but after a fourth tie at 6-6, the rout was on.  WSSU doubled the score at 16-8 and didn’t let up, finishing with a 25-13 win.
WSSU closed out the match-winning set with a 25-18 win in front a jubilant Whitaker Gym crowd.  The set featured kills by Gray and freshman Zoe White, a service ace by freshman Paris Joyner and blocks by Jireh Pinkney and White.  
Gray finished with 11 kills followed by Lanier with seven and freshman Niyonna McIntyre with four.  Freshman Angel Bowden had five service aces. Junior libero Myra Wallace had 16 digs, while sophomore Jericka Brodie added 12.  The Rams finished with 30 kills to JCSU’s 19.
WSSU returns to action Monday night with a 6 pm match against Livingstone at Whitaker Gym.
